Maple Hill Park is a beautiful 18-acre urban park
located in Middletown and Wallkill next to West Main Street and
County Route 78.
Orange
County Legislator Berkman proposed that 32 acres
of previously aquired open lands be incorporated into the park system
for use by the people of Middletown, Wallkill and all of Orange
County.
After diligent and persistent efforts by Legislator
Berkman, both municipalities and Orange County have entered
into a contract. This incorporates the 8-acre parcel bound by County
Route 78 and California Avenue (designated by Parcel A on the map)
into Maple Hill Park.
This space will allow expanded recreational opportunities.
Mr. Michael Perkins of the City of Middletown Parks
and Recreation Department has been working with Mayor DeStefano,
the Common Council, and others planning a pavilion, picnic tables
and hiking trails for use in the very near future.
Orange County has committed approximately $43,000
to this project as well as the use of Parcel A for the cost of $1
a year.
Expanding Maple Hill Park from 18 to 26 acres for
virtually no additional cost is a significant achievement. Berkman
is continuing efforts to include Parcel B in the future.
