Orange lawmaker gives pay hike back to community

Orange County legislator Jeffrey Berkman of Middletown has donated his annual salary increase to a number of community organizations for the second year in a row. Berkman said the idea came to him after he spoke to a constituent and he promised the person that when he was campaigning that he would not vote for pay raises for lawmakers. He said it was appropriate for him to donate the salary increase increase.

This year Berkman is giving away $700 to a number of Middletown area organizations.

Legislator Richard Roberts of Port Jervis is also said to donate his salary increase in the last two years.
